I think we have to stay within our microcosm(s) to cope. Otherwise its just too painful and scary to witness and eventually realize how insignificant we are. Those who struggle worse than us are only a breath away from where we stand. And those who couldn't have a care, keep their assets close to them.

I am tilting into to a dizzy spell moving further on to the broader end of distribution. Those belonging to the bottom of the pyramid break crumbs into halves, into quarters, into eigths ... I might not ever live to see a sincere day of freedom and the thought makes all effort seem futile.

You look into the eyes of the ones you rely on and they've suddenly drawn a blank. Instead of resistance, you resign, trimming the hedges of your own inner garden, hoping one day it will grow into lush landscapes.

I was shaking when I woke. Scenes of underwater witchdoctors storing little girls againsts wall boards. Their backs pierced with needles to keep them in place. The blood swirls rising like smoke swirls. Beautiful and terrifying. I was a victim of the needles just the same and swam towards freedom seeking sanction in the corridors of an old house. There the nightmare only grew. I was trapped with a vapid boy from my past. I could not ask him for help, he was maddened with glee despite the dark spirits that haunted the halls. "He's one of them", I thought. I will not chase those ghosts. I will not chase these ghosts.

As I sat broken down, I saw the fellowship of the most tiny tribe of worshipers. Under their halogen lighting and behind a bent and rusted door made of iron bars, they worshiped on the corner of a retro strip mall facing a semi-busy street. I imagined myself running across the street, letting myself past the gates and finding relief from a higher spirit. But I was too afraid, too alone to even move. I imagined myself as a traveler, a stumbler-into of magical life experiences. I imagined a certain liberation from all fears and the trust that nothing could go wrong if I jumped into this holy scene. Can you see her? The young Lolita, stumbling haplessly on odd adventures, but meanwhile accidentally touching people's lives. She learns something new and the sun sets as she sets out for another great story in the making. But on this particular evening, I was not her.

I had a dream last night that a giant earthquake hit Los Angeles and I stood in my loft and watched the building spinning out of control in circles. I watched from the inside. Knowing I had no time to run, I just stood still. Eventually it stopped and I jumped out of the window. After I jumped out I realized my entire floor had magically disappeared. All that was left was the top and the bottom floors of my building. There was no sign that the floors in between ever existed. It was all wiped away, without a speckle of proof that I had ever lived there; that I ever spent a single night there. I started walking in search of grass and daylight.

Grizzly Bear has been elegantly taking over the US indie music scene for a few years now with their lo-fi, harmonious haunts and dreamy folk soundscapes. At times enchanting, I found them often lulling (as in Zzzzzz), and although a few tracks were quite outstanding, I never was quite 100% enlisted on the craze. But in these grizzly times, I've had much more time on my hands to comb through music both old and new: some in my queue and some not yet acquired. I finally got around to Veckatimest, Grizzly Bear's third full length album, and it officially validated their critically acclaimed reputation. With a marked advancement in production and sound, Grizzly bear made a record that is full of emotion, experimentation and is catchy, without sacrificing their underground charm. I hope you enjoy these two tracks as much as I did - they caught me on the very first listen.

While in NYC this past weekend, my friends and I decided to ring in my birthday at good old Sway for Morrissey Night. Morrissey night is a total hipster night in the most typical fashion. But I have to say its one of the most long-running and reliable dance parties I know of in the city. Admittedly, I've dropped by Sway many a times while working in NYC and it's been this way for years. If you ask my opinion, I would agree to say that people (for the most part) do not dance in NYC. So arriving to a raging dance floor with kids moshing to post-punk and Brit pop is never really a let down.

There are three songs that will always get me on the dance floor at Morrissey Night I could have two broken legs and if any of these three songs came on, you'd find me legless and electrified in the middle of the pit. Sure enough they played all three of these golden tunes last Sunday - a perfect way to start a new year.

It's my birthday. That means I'm dwelling on my questionable successes and confirmed failures. There was a time when I couldn't wait to grow older, have my freedom, have my way. Its 2009 and here I am working in NYC wondering how its inhabitants came to be here. I myself have been on the edge of NYC for the last decade, but instead have remained in Los Angeles, moving everyday closer to skid row. Is it a subconscious magnetism to the tent dwellers? In our age of self-proclaimed artists, who is left to idolize? Certainly not the likes of Gaga. Our legends are falling, leaving behind the rebirth and rejuvenation for our obsessions with their immortalized images.

It seemed rather sudden. Grace Jones, New York's 80s Jungle Mother, fiercely leaped out of the past and announced a tour for her latest album: Hurricane, nearly 20 years after her last release. I've developed a particular numbness to live shows. I think I attribute it to a desensitization resulting from the number of shows I've seen in the last 15 years and the lack of soul or ingenuity in many of today's young performers. Without a second thought, I knew I was going to see her perform at the Hollywood Bowl, feeling giddy the moment I got my box seats.

She did not disappoint.

With costume changes after each song, she was a one-woman runway show, inspiring the industry's most jaded stylists and LA's gayest of the gays. She has been outfitted in the same image for the last 30 years and yet it is still cutting edge. Her contralto still powerful after 61 years with her body in the same fashion ... my palms burned from the applause.

I started dj'ing William's Blood (track 2, Hurricane) Aeroplane remix about a year ago, before I even heard the original track. It's a slow dance track, but progressive. By the end of it you'll feel the glorified emancipation that an old baptist choir inspires. The original is just as amazing.

Over and over and over, like a monkey with a miniature cymbal ... is how we listened to the last full length Hot Chip LP. Before the end of summer, kids on Hot-Chip-slayed dance floors could stomp, clap and shoulder jerk each and every cue. It's no wonder songs from their forthcoming album Made In The Dark, due to release in February 2008, have already started leaking.

I love a grimy beat and a belligerent synth line. Who doesn't? We all have a raging party monster inside of us - looking for any excuse to fling our hair, along with our cares, out on the dance floor. Hot chip serves it up, with sounds like long fingers, coaxing you out onto the floor, moving you on their dance! dance! puppet strings, one foot forward, one foot back.

They're annoyingly lovable: poppy, kitschy, rhythmically stereo and above all, uniquely Hot Chip.

OK, so last week i spontaneously co-hosted on Daisy's radio show and a lot of you tuned in - thank you :)

Some of you laughed, some of you shook your heads in disdain, however, all of you heard something new that you really liked. Many of you seemed most curious about a song I played by Apparat called "Arcadia" from his 2007 album Walls. Well here is everything you need to know about him.

Who is Apparat? He didn't just materialize out of nowhere. His real name is Sascha Ring and he 's been releasing albums since 2001 on his own label, Shitkatapult. He is most known for his minimal, pulsing IDM and familial type collaborations with other Berlinites such as Ellen Allien and Modeselektor.

It's no secret that I am a major fan of cross-genre electronic indie rock. Expect to hear thick layers of ambient fuzz, progressive syncopation of resonating beats combined with strings, guitars and cymbal crashes. Imagine M83, but less provoking. To give you an better idea, the final mix down was done by Josh Eustis from Telefon Tel Aviv.

Don't buy this album if you're level of music snobbery exceeds your ability to enjoy a few R&B vocal tracks (Raz Ohara is reminiscent of Prince on track 12, "Over and Over"). Don't buy this album if you are looking to relive your rave days (this is not one of Apparat's dj sets). Don't buy this album if you are afraid to groove (some people are!). Buy this album if you are into music that sounds like a soundtrack for, well, "life". Its melancholy and romanticism are undeniable.

Although some critics may argue otherwise, I label this album an essential. Walls is, without a doubt, one of my personal favorites for 2007.

I bring you Yeasayer ...

In this age of prophesized doom and government conspiracy, I find myself co-signing to liberalist ideals and radical ways of thinking. To further my paranoia and sense of urgency, I sat down for a full 2 hours to watch the web documentary Zeitgeist; a real eye opener indeed. The film rakes through soiled evidence from 9/11, exposes religion, historical events, government chip implants and gives us someone else to blame for our money troubles. What was i thinking?! I left my friend's apartment off Santa Monica Blvd late last night, looking over my shoulder like a smoking man scene from the X-files.

Its only appropriate that I've been listening to Yeasayer's debut LP, All Hour Cymbals, on repeat. Straight out of Brooklyn, these 4 multi-instrumentalists definitely comprise one of the better genre-blurring indie bands to hit the scene. Take the late 70's/early 80's feel of Talking Heads and Brian Eno, combined with Beach Boy harmonies, Animal Collective spastica, worldly chants, ethnic percussion and experimental ambient synth lines and you are just grazing the surface of this complex and beautiful album.

In the song 2080, lead singer Chris Keating sings out "i can't sleep when i think about the times we are living in/ i can't sleep when i think about the future i was born into"... he couldn't have said it better for me.

In a world foreshadowing chaos, suppression and uprise; in a world where the naysayers create war, consumerism and ruin, the Yeasayers create a spiritualism that transcends continental boundaries, cultures and time periods to remind you that you aren't the only one who is concerned. And if for some reason you aren't the slightest bit concerned, it's probably time to wake up.

Thom Yorke Thom Yorke Thom Yorke Thom Yorkkkke!!!!! It felt like my birthday to finally download In Rainbows. I'm an unapologetic Radiohead fanatic. i give this album an enthusiastic two thumbs up.

How else will you get your fill of his musical wizardry? Waiting for Radiohead to pump out another one can be exhausting. God knows why we were lucky enough to get a solo album out of him last year. Allow me to wet your taste buds with one more sweet morsel from Thom Yorke this year: a track entitled White Flash from the album Happy Birthday! by Modeselektor.

Check out Modeselektor's album if you are into that deep, dark, dirty electronica that plays into the wee hours of Berlin's seediest nightclubs. Happy Birthday! cranks out pulsing bass lines, blips and glitches, eerie ambiance along with the occasional rapper spittin' at you. There are other guests on the album who will pleasantly surprise you as well; including Apparat and Maximo Park ... not mad at that in the least bit ...

Today i got an email informing me that i can now pre-order Radiohead's upcoming album In Rainbows. Radiohead is like the quintessential to your record collection. They are like the pre-k level of Indie Rock 101. If you label yourself a super music snob, you won't even mention them in your list of influences - because it's just wayy too obvious. It's like ... duhhh, they're genius and everyone knows it.

If you are one of those self proclaiming music snobs, you know, like one of those assholes who says "i'm sorry, i'm just a bit of a music snob", when you engage in the usual who-are-you-listening-to discussion, you most likely say you loved Radiohead before "they went techno" or "when they were still good".

Listen to me: it's called evolving. You know, when you don't keep generating the same sh*t over and over, with different lyrics on top. Thom Yorke doesn't need to make music that's marketable. he's completely clairvoyant. He knows what's good before anyone has discovered it. It may take time for some to catch up....... it's a delayed reaction..... sort of a re-tard-ation.

It's clever in a way. I doubt radiohead is hurting for your $10-20. and they are smart enough to know that once the record drops, transfer wires are going live and hot to spread the golden tracks.

there are very few who can deny that Milla Jovovich is one of the top ten most beautiful women in the world. she's totally gorgeous... she's like the official predecessor to Linda Evangelista, with campaigns ranging from Calvin Klein to L'oreal. she's a model, actress, fashion designer entrepreneur and musician... (squealing halt).

Milla Jovovich is actively pursuing a music career and has been for some time. she performs live and has music videos. she has 2 albums out and also an EP. she even plays the guitar while wailing her heart out to some of her own original tunes!

i can't decide which video is more gut-wrenching. it's like that time, when you were a kid and every news channel blasted Milli Vanilli for lip syncing. and it wasn't that they were just lip syncing, but that they didn't even sing the vocals on their chart topping album! how bummed out were you? you wanted to blame it on the rain.

maybe it was like the day you found out that Björk doesn't write most of her music. but that made sense. you could deal with that. her music is complex, avant-guarde and, at times, required the accompaniment of entire symphonies and/or highly technological music nerds in order for her to perform live.

i guess this is just one of those things that you just throw in the pile of i-shoulda-knowns. i mean, she is so hot that you wanted her to be good at music too. you wanted her to defy those common unwritten laws about models who can't act, and actors who can't sing....

i think when it comes down to the very bottom of it all, we can only be honest with ourselves: no harm, no fowl, Milla. you may have disappointed us (even, at times, to the point of total nausea). however, one thing is for sure, this certainly wouldn't make me kick you out of bed. no-sir-eeeeeeeeeeeee......not for a second.

No, seriously.

I don't understand how your ego got so blown up, when the first single off your (highly anticipated) successive album sounds like Daft Punk has thrown up. No, it's not a remix; it's a regurgitation. I mean, what were you thinking?!

You are the ultimate crumb snatcher. You scoop up the crumbs of trail blazers before you and sprinkle a dash of syncopation, pour on a ton of sub-par lyrics and let it simmer over the airwaves, expecting to make a hit.

Some may argue that your new single, Stronger, is genius, composed of clever "samples". Here's why I disagree: you've done this before. You're a repeat-offender; and you've been caught red-handed.

Example 1:
Kanye West - Young Folks (feat Peter, Bjorn and John)
WTF???? Terrible. What better way to tap into the indie music scene than to rap over the this year's most overplayed independent hit?

Example 2:
Kanye West - US Placers (feat Thom Yorke)
ok, so you basically rapped over Thom Yorke's, The Eraser. wow. awful. we get it; you guys are here to stay. the more we try to erase you, the more that you'll appear. i don't think that's the general malaise that Thom hoped to inflict upon his listeners with his title track.

Example 3:
Kanye West - Milkshake Freestyle (feat Kelis)
By far the worst one of them all. ("my raps is better than yours....").

To top it off, you're mad that MTV agrees:

Don't think i say these things in haste. I actually enjoyed your first album. I would even go so far as to say it was almost groundbreaking. Hey, it's not like Daft Punk has never been sampled before. However, when Busta Rhymes did it, it was well executed. It made sense.

My recommendation is that you stick to what you know. Stop assuming you are the future of pop music just because you dug underground and tapped a gold mine.

(CBS 5) BERKELEY A Berkeley watchdog organization that tracks military spending said it uncovered a strange U.S. military proposal to create a hormone bomb that could purportedly turn enemy soldiers into homosexuals and make them more interested in sex than fighting.

Pentagon officials on Friday confirmed to CBS 5 that military leaders had considered, and then subsquently rejected, building the so-called "Gay Bomb."

Edward Hammond, of Berkeley's Sunshine Project, had used the Freedom of Information Act to obtain a copy of the proposal from the Air Force's Wright Laboratory in Dayton, Ohio.

As part of a military effort to develop non-lethal weapons, the proposal suggested, "One distasteful but completely non-lethal example would be strong aphrodisiacs, especially if the chemical also caused homosexual behavior."

The documents show the Air Force lab asked for $7.5 million to develop such a chemical weapon.

"The Ohio Air Force lab proposed that a bomb be developed that contained a chemical that would cause enemy soldiers to become gay, and to have their units break down because all their soldiers became irresistably attractive to one another," Hammond said after reviewing the documents.

"The notion was that a chemical that would probably be pleasant in the human body in low quantities could be identified, and by virtue of either breathing or having their skin exposed to this chemical, the notion was that soliders would become gay," explained Hammond.

The Pentagon told CBS 5 that the proposal was made by the Air Force in 1994.

Gay community leaders in California said Friday that they found the notion of a "gay bomb" both offensive and almost laughable at the same time.

"Throughout history we have had so many brave men and women who are gay and lesbian serving the military with distinction," said Geoff Kors of Equality California. "So, it's just offensive that they think by turning people gay that the other military would be incapable of doing their job. And its absurd because there's so much medical data that shows that sexual orientation is immutable and cannot be changed."
